CONTEST WINNER (Click on "News" tab for details)

Canon EOS 5D Mark II with EF 24-105mm f/4.0L USM (24mm, 1/1250s, f/5.6, ISO 100)

Traveling down State Highway S-2 (In San Diego's East County) into the Anza Borrego Desert on a very cold, blustery day in October, I spied this interesting sight on the side of the road. Leading into a large, private ranch was a stone wall, with a 19th Century metal wagon wheel imbedded in it. As I looked closer I could see the passing thunderstorm framed in its spokes. I took a chance and clicked away. Although I was pleased with the composition (It required a minimum of trimming), I thought that the image overall lacked punch and drama. I processed the original image HDR, and it provided the color enhancement and moody atmosphere that I was looking for. It has since turned out to be a favorite image amongst viewers.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II with EF 17-40mm f/4.0L USM (17mm, 1/125s, f/22, ISO 200)

This ultra wide angle image of Clark Dry Lake Bed was captured in San Diego County's Anza Borrego Desert. The 17mm focal length, on a full-frame camera, provided the expansive coverage that I was looking for. The f/22 aperature setting gave me great DOF, both highlighting the cracked mud of the lake bed and keeping the distant mountains in sharp focus. The original image was dramatic, but lacked the color punch I was looking for. I processed the orginal image HDR and liked the result.

Leica C-Lux 2 (1/400s, f/4.5, ISO 100) processed PSE6, converted to Vintage Monochrome from color

My brother and I were cruising Halong Bay, in North Vietnam, in 2008. Halong is a UNESCO World Heritage Site containing some 2,000 limestone islets. It is a beautiful location, but on this particular day the weather was overcast, and exposure was difficult. I wasn't terribly excited with the color JPEG, but decided to play around in PSE6. Converting the color JPEG to a Vintage Monochrome (a PSE6 preset), I was able to bring out the mysterious atmosphere of the bay...I found both the sepia tone rendering and the image texture pleasing to the eye. I am not a huge fan of post-processing, but in this case it gave a good result to a marginal original capture.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II with EF 24-105mm f/4.0L USM (TV, 105mm, 1/200s, f/5.6, ISO 400)

I came across these two adorable children in a Maleku village in the interior of Costa Rica. They are probably brother and sister, but I never found out for sure. Although the young girl is obviously the older of the two, the little boy appears to be imparting a great wisdom from ages past. If this had been observed in Tibet or Nepal, I would have guessed that he was a young Buddhist monk in training. Like so many candid shots, this image begs more questions than it answers. They never heard me behind them, and the precious moment vanished in an instant after the shutter clicked.
